About Slop Grenade

collecting artificial nonsense, jokes and memes

AI is confidently wrong a lot. It says so in full sentences, with a straight face, and usually with a helpful summary at the end. Slop Grenade is where we collect the best of it: the disasters, the unhinged chatbot quotes, and the memes from the frontier of artificial nonsense.

A short history of the Slop Grenade name: origin and meaning

“We call those ‘slop grenades’ that people toss at each other. That’s definitely a bad thing.”

Tobias Lütke, Shopify CEO, on The Knowledge Project podcast, via Fortune

We did not invent the name. “Slop” was already the word for AI-generated filler nobody asked for, and researchers at BetterUp Labs and Stanford’s Social Media Lab had given the office version its own name, “workslop”: output that looks finished and still has to be redone by whoever receives it.

The grenade came next.

  • December 2025. The domain noslopgrenade.com is registered. By May 2026 the one-page site on it is doing the rounds. Its whole message: stop throwing AI-generated walls of text into conversations.
  • September 15, 2026. Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke tells Shane Parrish on The Knowledge Project podcast that Shopify staff call unread AI output lobbed at colleagues “slop grenades”. On X he gives “full credit” to Harry Brundage for coining the term and adds, “Let’s make it a thing.”
  • The same week. Fortune, Search Engine Journal and others pick it up, and the phrase leaves the building.

In its original sense a slop grenade is something a person does: you pull the pin by not reading what the machine wrote, then hand it to someone else. We use the name more loosely, for the whole blast radius.

What counts as slop

Being wrong is ordinary. Being wrong with total confidence is content.

We are looking for three things.

  • Disasters. An AI system said or did something wrong and it had consequences somebody had to clean up.
  • Quotes. Things a chatbot actually said that no reasonable person, or product, should have.
  • Memes. What the internet made of it afterwards.
